How to Convert HEIC to JPG with Canva

Convert HEIC photos to JPG in Canva: upload the image, match the design size to the photo, download as JPG, then check dimensions, quality and metadata.

Canva can turn a HEIC photo into a JPG through its editor. You upload the HEIC file, place it on a design, and download that design as a JPG. The result is a new image that Canva renders, so its size and quality depend on the design and download settings you choose, not only on the original photo.

Before you start

Canva runs in a browser or in its apps and processes uploads online, so this is not a local conversion. You need a Canva account, a working internet connection and the HEIC file available on the device you are using. Uploaded images are kept in your Canva uploads until you remove them. If the photo shows people, documents or other sensitive details, check Canva's current privacy terms and any workplace or school rules before you upload it.

Note the photo's width and height in pixels first. Your file manager's info or properties panel, or the info view in your photo app, usually shows them. You need these numbers to size the design so the JPG is not cropped or downscaled.

Step-by-step instructions

  • Create a new design with a custom size, choose pixels as the unit, and enter the photo's width and height.
  • Upload the HEIC file from the Uploads panel, or drag it into the editor window.
  • Add the uploaded image to the page and resize it so it fills the page exactly. If Canva offers to set the image as the page background, that is a quick way to fill the page edge to edge.
  • Open the download options. In the current web editor they are under Share, then Download. Labels can differ between versions and apps.
  • Choose JPG as the file type. If a quality control appears, set it to the highest value. Keep the size at its original scale. Some size and quality options depend on your Canva plan.
  • Select which pages to download and confirm. If you download several pages at once, Canva usually packages the JPG files in a ZIP archive.

The mobile apps follow the same order, but buttons sit in different places. On a phone, the system photo picker may give Canva a converted copy instead of the original HEIC file, depending on the device and how you select the photo. The original HEIC on your device is never changed. When you are finished, you can delete the upload from Canva if you don't want it stored in your account.

Check the output

Open the downloaded file and confirm three things: it has a .jpg extension, it opens in your usual image viewer, and its pixel dimensions match the original photo. Look along the edges for white borders or cropping. Then zoom into skies, gradients, shadows and fine detail to check for compression blocks or banding.

JPG stores standard 8-bit color, so HDR or wide-gamut highlights from a phone camera may look flatter after conversion. Because Canva exports a newly rendered image, details such as capture date, camera information and location may not carry over. Check the file's properties if you need them. Live Photo motion and any extra images inside a HEIC container are not part of the result, only the still image you placed on the page.

Common problems and next steps

The HEIC upload fails

Update your browser or the Canva app and try again, or try a different browser. Make sure the file really is a HEIC image and that it downloaded completely, for example if it came from a cloud drive or a messaging app. If the upload still fails, export a JPG copy with your device's own photo tools and upload that instead.

The JPG is smaller, blurry or cropped

The design size controls the output. If the design is smaller than the photo, the JPG is downscaled. If the aspect ratio differs, you get cropping or empty margins. Create a new design with the exact pixel dimensions, place the image so it fills the page, and download again at the highest quality available.

Colors look different from the original

Some shift is possible when an HDR or wide-color HEIC photo becomes a standard JPG. If color accuracy matters, compare both files on the same screen. You can also try converting with another tool that lets you control color handling.

You need to convert many photos or keep metadata

Canva works one design at a time, so large batches are slow. It also doesn't guarantee that photo metadata is kept. For batches, or when date and location must survive, use your operating system's export feature or a dedicated converter that states how it handles metadata.

You want to avoid HEIC files in the future

On an iPhone, you can capture in JPEG by choosing Most Compatible under Settings, Camera, Formats. This affects only new photos. For photos you already have, the Automatic option under Settings, Photos, Transfer to Mac or PC can deliver compatible copies when you transfer files to a computer.
