Can't Type in Microsoft Teams Meeting Chat: Troubleshooting

Practical steps to fix the Microsoft Teams meeting chat when the message box will not accept typing, including app, meeting policy and input checks.

Identify the symptom and environment

Check exactly where typing fails. In a Teams meeting, the meeting chat panel normally shows a message box above the send button. If the box is missing, grayed out, or accepts no characters, note whether you are using the desktop app for Windows or macOS, Teams on the web, or the mobile app. Also record whether the problem starts in every meeting or only a specific meeting, and whether other participants can type.

Isolate where the fault occurs

Try typing in a direct chat or a channel conversation outside the meeting. If those work, the keyboard and Teams input generally function correctly, and the issue is more likely related to that meeting or its chat policy. If typing also fails elsewhere in Teams, test typing in another app such as a plain text editor to rule out a keyboard or operating system input problem.

On desktop, check whether the Teams window has focus. Click directly in the chat message box and look for a blinking cursor. If the cursor appears but typed characters do not show, the issue may be with the current input method or keyboard layout. If the message box is present but covered by an error, note the exact message and any code shown.

For a specific meeting, consider whether the organizer changed meeting options or whether your account uses restricted meeting chat settings. A disabled chat may show as read-only or hide the typing area instead of producing a keyboard error. Meeting policy changes are often account or organization controlled, so a personal keyboard check will not reveal them.

Try reversible fixes in order

Leave the meeting and rejoin it. In the Teams meeting controls, leave the meeting, then use the same meeting link to join again. Check whether the chat message box responds after rejoining. This clears a temporary meeting panel state without changing account settings.

Switch between the desktop app and Teams on the web. If you are in the desktop app, open the meeting in a supported browser, join with the same account, and try the meeting chat. If the web version accepts typing, continue there for the current meeting and later check the desktop app for updates.

Close and restart the Teams application. On Windows or macOS, fully exit Teams rather than just minimizing it, then open it again and rejoin the meeting. Restarting reloads the meeting interface and can restore a message box that stopped accepting input.

If reading the meeting chat works but your message box is absent or disabled, ask the meeting organizer whether chat is enabled in the meeting options. If enabled, ask them to confirm the current setting and whether the policy allows attendees to write. Do not change security or meeting policy settings on your own beyond checking what is already visible.

Check the keyboard input method, especially when Teams accepts typing elsewhere. If multiple keyboard layouts or input methods are installed, switch to the default layout for the operating system and try again. Reset sticky keys, filter keys, or other accessibility input features only if they are already enabled and suspected to be interfering.

Confirm the result

After each change, click the message box, type a short test message, and send it. The symptom is resolved when the box keeps its cursor, typed characters appear normally, and the message is sent and visible to other participants. If the box is missing because meeting chat is disabled, confirming the setting with the organizer is the relevant result rather than a keyboard test.

Recheck the same meeting if possible, because a fix that works in a direct chat does not automatically prove the meeting chat is fixed. A successful test in the affected meeting with another participant able to see the message is the clearest confirmation.

If the problem remains

Keep notes on the environment: Teams version, operating system, whether the problem appears in the app, browser, or mobile, the meeting chat policy shown by the organizer, and the exact wording of any error. Record whether typing fails in all meetings and all Teams conversation areas or only in one place.

If typing fails in multiple applications, the cause is likely outside Teams. Test with another keyboard if available, check the operating system keyboard settings, or contact the device or IT support team. A Teams meeting chat failure alone does not prove failed hardware, especially when other apps accept input normally.

When the issue is account or organization specific, contact your administrator with the collected observations. If the Teams app is outdated or damaged, use the supported update or repair route for your platform rather than downloading unknown tools. Ask for repair or administrator help only after the simple environmental checks above have not restored typing.
