Can I Record Google Meet Using a Screen Recorder?
Yes, a screen recorder can capture a Google Meet call. Learn how it differs from Meet's built-in recording, how to capture both sides of the audio, and why consent matters.
The short answer
Yes. A screen recorder captures whatever your computer displays and, depending on its settings, the sound it plays and picks up. A Google Meet call in a browser tab or app window is just another thing on your screen, so a screen recorder can record it the same way it records anything else.
There are two things that could change what that answer means for you. First, a screen recorder is not the same as Meet's own recording feature. Second, being technically able to record a call doesn't mean you may record it without telling anyone. Both are covered below.
Screen recording vs. Meet's built-in recording
| Aspect | Third-party or system screen recorder | Google Meet's built-in recording |
| Where it runs | On your own device, outside of Meet | Inside Meet, managed by Google |
| Who can use it | Anyone with a recorder on their device | Depends on the account type and on settings an organization's administrator controls |
| What it captures | Exactly what appears on your screen and whatever audio sources you enable | Meet's own view of the meeting |
| Where the file goes | Wherever your recorder saves it on your device | Google's storage, tied to the meeting's account |
| Participant notice | Meet has no built-in way to announce a recording happening outside the app | Participants are shown that the meeting is being recorded |
If the record option doesn't appear in your Meet controls, your account or organization probably doesn't offer it. A screen recorder is the usual alternative in that case.
Get consent before you record
A screen recorder doesn't warn the other people on the call, so telling them is your responsibility. In the US, recording laws vary by state, and some states require everyone on a call to agree to being recorded. Workplaces and schools may also have their own rules. The simplest safe approach is to announce at the start of the call that you're recording and confirm that everyone agrees. This guide is not legal advice. If the recording matters for work or legal purposes, check the rules that apply to you.
How to record a Meet call with a screen recorder
- 1. Choose a recorder that can capture system audio, meaning the sound your computer plays, as well as your microphone. Some built-in recorders capture only the microphone, which leaves out the other participants' voices.
- 2. Decide what to capture: the full screen, one window, or one browser tab. Recording only the Meet window keeps notifications and other apps out of the file.
- 3. In Meet, choose the layout you want saved. The recorder captures the tiles exactly as you see them, so a spotlighted speaker or a tiled grid will look the same in the recording.
- 4. Turn on both audio sources in the recorder: system audio for the other people and your microphone for your own voice.
- 5. If your system asks for screen-recording or microphone permission for the recorder, grant it. Without that permission the recording may be blank or silent.
- 6. Start the recorder, then announce the recording on the call.
- 7. Stop the recorder when the call ends and note where it saved the file.
Do a test recording first
Before an important call, record a short test, for example a minute in a test meeting or with a colleague. Then play the file back and check three things separately:
- Video: The Meet window is captured, isn't black or frozen, and shows the layout you expect.
- Other participants' audio: You can hear them clearly. If you can't, system audio wasn't captured.
- Your own audio: Your voice is present and easy to understand. If the meter moved but the playback is faint or muffled, the problem is with your microphone or its level, not with detection.
If you listen through speakers, the microphone can pick up the other participants a second time, which causes an echo in the file. Headphones avoid this. Also note that whether your camera works in Meet is a separate question from whether the recorder captures the window. A working camera tile doesn't guarantee the recording is working, so check the playback.
What this guide doesn't cover
No tested information was available on specific recorder apps, their settings, file sizes or quality results, so none are recommended here. Check a recorder's documentation to confirm that it can capture system audio on your operating system before you rely on it for a call.
