MY WEBCAM TEST GUIDE

Can Google Meet Be Recorded on a Phone?

Whether you can record a Google Meet call on your phone depends on your account and the app. Learn about built-in recording, screen recording, and how to check that it worked.

The short answer

Often yes, but "recording" can mean two different things, and the answer differs for each. Google Meet has its own recording feature, which is controlled by your Google account type and your organization's settings. Separately, your phone's operating system has a screen recorder that captures whatever is on the display. The built-in Meet feature is the official route. The phone's screen recorder works regardless of account type, but it has audio limitations you should test before relying on it.

Option 1: Google Meet's built-in recording

Meet's own recording is not available to everyone. It is generally offered on certain paid Google Workspace editions and some paid Google consumer subscriptions, not on free personal accounts. In a work or school account, an administrator must also have enabled recording. Typically only the meeting organizer, or people in the same organization with the right permissions, can start a recording. When a recording runs, participants are notified, and the file is usually saved to the organizer's Google Drive.

Whether the Meet app on your phone can start a recording has varied over time and between versions. Historically, recording could be started only from a computer, while mobile participants could just see that a recording was in progress. No confirmed current information was available for this article, so check your own app directly.

  • Join or start a meeting in the Meet app.
  • Open the more options menu or the activities panel during the call.
  • Look for a Recording option.
  • If it appears and is selectable, start it, then confirm that the on-screen recording indicator shows up.
  • If the option is missing or grayed out, your account, your role in the meeting, your administrator's settings, or your app version may not allow it.

If the option is unavailable on your phone but your account supports recording, you can usually start the recording from a computer, or ask the organizer to do it.

Option 2: Your phone's screen recorder

Both Android and iPhone include a screen recording tool, typically found in Quick Settings on Android and in Control Center on iPhone. You may need to add the tool to that panel in your phone's settings first. This method saves a video file to your phone. Other participants are not notified automatically.

  • Add the screen recording control to Quick Settings or Control Center if it isn't already there.
  • Open the Meet call.
  • Start screen recording from the panel and choose the audio setting. Android recorders often let you pick device audio, microphone, or both. On iPhone, a long press on the control shows a microphone toggle.
  • Return to the call and stop the recording when finished.
  • Find the video in your gallery or Photos app.

The audio needs particular attention. Phones handle call audio differently from ordinary media, and depending on the device, OS version, and settings, a screen recording may capture your voice but not other participants, or the reverse, or neither. Some apps can also block capture entirely. No tested results for specific phones were available here, so the only reliable check is your own trial run.

Verify the recording before an important call

Seeing the recording indicator only confirms that recording started. It does not confirm that the file contains usable video and sound. Make a short test call with a friend or a second device, then play the file back.

  • Video: the call window is visible in the file, not a black screen.
  • Your audio: your voice is present and intelligible.
  • Other participants' audio: their voices are present and intelligible.
  • File location: for built-in recordings, the file appears in the organizer's Google Drive, which can take some time after the meeting ends. For screen recordings, it appears in your phone's gallery or Photos app.

Get consent before recording

Meet's built-in recording notifies participants, but a phone screen recording does not. Recording laws vary, and some US states require consent from everyone on a call. Your workplace or school may also have its own rules. The safe practice is to tell everyone you intend to record and get their agreement before you start.

No verified current details were available about which subscription plans include Meet recording, whether the latest mobile app can start recordings, or how specific phone models capture call audio. Your account's settings, your administrator, and a test recording on your own device are the definitive sources.
