Can Apple TV Play AV1 Video?

Find out whether Apple TV can play AV1 video, which models support AV1 decoding, and what to do when AV1 files will not play or transcode properly.

Answer the main question

Support depends on the Apple TV model. Newer models with A15 Bionic or later hardware can decode AV1, while older Apple TV HD and earlier Apple TV 4K models cannot. If you are trying to play an AV1 file on an older device, the Apple TV is not failing because of a temporary software issue; the required hardware decoder is absent.

Explain how it works

AV1 is a video encoding format designed to deliver comparable quality at a lower bitrate than older formats such as H.264. On devices without hardware AV1 decoding, playback may still be possible through software decoding, but that depends on the app and the available processor performance. Apple TV playback does not use a universal media player; each app can set its own format support and streaming behavior.

Model-specific support matters because Apple does not enable AV1 through a single tvOS setting. A file that plays in one app on a supported Apple TV may be rejected or transcoded in another app, especially when the source is a network stream, local media server, or camera recording.

Apply the explanation

Before troubleshooting, identify the Apple TV model and the source of the video. If a remote camera or capture source records AV1, check whether the recording app offers a compatible format such as H.264 or HEVC. Changing the recording format can be more reliable than trying to force AV1 playback on unsupported hardware.

For local files, try a media player app that reports AV1 support for your Apple TV model. If the file still will not play, do not assume the Apple TV is defective. Confirm the file uses a supported container and check whether the app is attempting software decoding. High frame rate AV1 content can make software decoding more demanding, so a lower frame rate or lower bitrate export may behave differently.

Limits and related questions

AV1 support on Apple TV is not the same as AV1 support elsewhere in an Apple ecosystem. A Mac, iPhone, or iPad may decode the same file while an older Apple TV cannot. Support also depends on the playback path: a cloud service may transcode AV1 into another format before sending video to the Apple TV, so successful playback does not prove that the Apple TV itself decoded AV1.

Audio can create a separate limitation. A video file may use AV1 for video and an audio codec that the Apple TV or the current app cannot handle. When a file has picture problems or refuses to start, check audio and container compatibility separately from video encoding.

Privacy and file handling depend on the app and streaming service. Playing AV1 content through a third-party media app can involve network requests, metadata sharing, or cloud transcoding. Review the specific app rather than treating the format itself as an indication of how a file is handled.
