How to Manage Camera Permissions on iPad
Allow, block or review camera access for apps and websites on iPad, check that the right camera works, and fix common iPad camera permission problems.
iPadOS asks before any app uses the camera, and it stores your answer for each app. If you denied a request, the app usually won't ask again, so you have to change the setting yourself. This guide shows where iPad camera permissions are stored, how to change them for apps and websites, and what to check when the camera still doesn't work.
Before you start
- Know which app or browser you want to use. Permissions are set separately for each app, not for the iPad as a whole.
- Open that app at least once and try to use the camera. An app only appears in the camera permission list after it has requested access.
- Check whether your iPad is managed by a school or employer. A management profile or Screen Time restrictions can lock camera settings, and you may not be able to change them yourself.
- Update iPadOS if you can. Menu names differ slightly between versions. For example, the Privacy section was renamed Privacy & Security in iPadOS 16.
Changing a permission happens on the device and takes effect immediately. What the app does with the video afterwards is a separate matter. Some apps keep processing on the iPad, while video-call and online image tools may send video to their servers. Check the app's own privacy information before you rely on either behaviour.
Step-by-step instructions
Review all apps with camera access
- 1. Open Settings.
- 2. Tap Privacy & Security. On older versions of iPadOS, tap Privacy.
- 3. Tap Camera.
- 4. Turn the switch on for each app that should use the camera, and off for each app that shouldn't.
Change access for a single app
- 1. Open Settings and scroll down to the list of installed apps.
- 2. Tap the app's name.
- 3. Turn Camera on or off. If there is no Camera switch, the app hasn't requested camera access yet.
If an app is already open when you turn access on, close it fully and reopen it. Some apps only check the camera permission when they start.
Allow the camera for websites in Safari
- 1. To set a default for all sites, open Settings, tap Safari, then tap Camera and choose Ask, Deny or Allow.
- 2. To change one site, open it in Safari and tap the page settings button in the address bar. Then open Website Settings and set Camera to the option you want.
- 3. Reload the page. If Safari asks for permission, tap Allow.
Other browsers on iPad need two permissions. First, the browser app itself must have camera access in Settings. Second, you must allow the camera for the site inside that browser. If the browser app is blocked, no website can use the camera, whatever the site setting says.
Reset every camera permission at once
Go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPad > Reset > Reset Location & Privacy. This clears location and privacy permissions for all apps, not just the camera. Each app will ask again the next time it needs access. Use this only if adjusting individual apps hasn't helped.
Check the output
- Open the app or web page and start the camera preview. A green dot at the top of the screen means an app is currently using the camera.
- Open Control Center to see which app is using the camera, or used it most recently.
- Make sure the correct camera is selected. Many apps let you switch between the front and rear cameras, and some web pages offer a camera list. If the image shows the wrong side, change the camera in that app or page.
- Check the image quality. Resolution and frame rate are set by the app or website, not by the permission. A low-quality preview usually means the app chose lower settings or the connection is slow.
- Test in good, even lighting. In dim light the picture can look dark, noisy or choppy, which is easy to mistake for a permission problem.
- If you want to see when apps accessed the camera, turn on App Privacy Report in Privacy & Security. It is available on recent iPadOS versions and shows activity from the time you turn it on.
Common problems and next steps
The app is missing from the Camera list
The app hasn't asked for camera access yet. Open it, start the feature that needs the camera, and answer the prompt. If no prompt appears, the app may not support the camera on iPad. Check its documentation.
The switch is greyed out or the Camera app has disappeared
Open Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions and check Allowed Apps to see whether the camera is turned off there. If the iPad is managed by an organisation, its profile may block the camera. In that case, ask the administrator.
Permission is allowed but the preview is black
- Close any other app that might be using the camera, such as a video call, then reopen the app you want to use.
- Some apps pause the camera in Split View, Slide Over or Stage Manager. Switch the app to full screen and test again.
- For websites, check both the browser's camera permission and the site's own setting, then reload the page.
- Restart the iPad. If the built-in Camera app also shows a black screen, the cause is not app permissions. Contact Apple Support or an authorised service provider.
The camera works but looks wrong
If the framing keeps shifting during calls, the front camera may be using Center Stage on supported models. You can usually turn this off in Control Center while a call is active. For blur or low detail, clean the lens, improve the lighting, and look for resolution or quality settings inside the app.
