Blue Timecode Sync: Compatibility and Setup
Practical setup and compatibility notes for blue timecode sync on cameras and audio devices, including verification steps and common fixes.
Before you start
Check whether your camera or recorder exposes a timecode input, output, or Bluetooth-based timecode option. Blue timecode sync is usually a device-level setting, not a separate install. Confirm that firmware is current and that the devices you plan to synchronize share at least one compatible connection method.
Step-by-step instructions
Identify the connection method
Look in the camera or audio recorder menu for timecode, sync, or external control settings. Choose the method shown by your devices, such as a cabled timecode port or a wireless connection. Do not force a connection type that the ports or menus do not list.
Set one device as the source
Decide which device supplies the master timecode. On that device, set timecode output or master mode if the option is available. On the other device, select external timecode input or follower mode.
Match frame rate and format
Use the same frame-rate family on all devices. If one camera records 23.98 fps and another records 24 fps, timecode may drift or be interpreted incorrectly. For drop-frame and non-drop-frame options, choose the same setting where the format supports it.
Enable and connect
Turn on the timecode output on the master and confirm the follower shows an incoming signal. For a wireless sync option, pair the devices first and then enable timecode transfer from the master. Keep the master powered on during the session.
Check the output
Play back a short clip from each device and compare timecode in the metadata or on-screen display. The values should advance at the same rate and hold the expected offset. If the follower shows dashes, a warning, or frozen timecode, the sync is not active.
Be aware that some devices sync timecode only while the connection remains present. Removing a cable or ending a wireless link may allow the follower to continue from the last received value with slight drift.
Common problems and next steps
- No incoming timecode: check the cable, port direction, and whether the follower is set to external timecode instead of internal.
- Timecode drifts: compare frame-rate settings and confirm the master remains powered and connected.
- Wireless pairing fails: move devices closer together and retry after clearing any existing pairing if the menu supports it.
- Unexpected offset: inspect whether a preset start time or jam-sync setting was applied.
After a successful sync, record a short test sequence on all devices before the main shoot. Recheck sync after changing batteries, moving recording locations, or updating firmware.
