AVIF to JPG: How to Convert an Image

Learn how to convert AVIF to JPG, choose a suitable converter, handle transparent backgrounds and check the finished image before uploading it.

How to convert AVIF to JPG

To convert an AVIF image to JPG, open it in an image editor or converter that supports AVIF input, choose JPG or JPEG as the output format, and save the converted copy. JPG and JPEG refer to the same image format. Renaming a file from .avif to .jpg does not convert its contents.

  • 1. Keep the original AVIF file so you can return to it if needed.
  • 2. Open or upload the image in a tool that explicitly supports AVIF-to-JPG conversion.
  • 3. Select JPG or JPEG as the output format.
  • 4. If the image has transparent areas, choose a background color when the tool offers that option.
  • 5. Choose the quality setting if available, then convert and save or download the result.
  • 6. Open the JPG to check its appearance before using it.

Choose an online converter or a local editor

An online converter can be convenient if you are comfortable uploading the image. Check its current file-size limits, conversion limits and file-retention policy first. For sensitive photos, consider software that explicitly processes files locally on your device.

A local image editor is suitable if it can both open AVIF files and export JPEG files. Look for Export or Save As; changing the filename alone is insufficient. For several images, check whether the tool supports batch conversion.

No current product documentation, pricing or test results were supplied for specific converters. This guide therefore cannot verify which services are free, what limits they apply or how they handle uploaded files.

Check quality, transparency and file size

JPEG uses lossy compression, meaning conversion can discard image detail. A higher quality setting generally preserves more detail while producing a larger file. Converting to JPG will not restore detail missing from the original, and the result is not guaranteed to be smaller than the AVIF.

JPG does not support transparency. Transparent areas must become a solid background, so inspect those areas after conversion. If you need to preserve transparency, use a format that supports it, such as PNG, provided your destination accepts it.

If conversion fails or the JPG is rejected

If a tool cannot open the AVIF, check that it explicitly supports the format and that the original file opens in another compatible viewer. An unsupported format and a damaged file require different fixes; a failed conversion alone does not identify the cause.

If the converted JPG opens normally but a website rejects it, check the website’s requirements for file size, image dimensions and accepted formats. Conversion changes the image format; resizing or reducing JPEG quality may also be necessary to meet an upload limit.
