MY WEBCAM TEST GUIDE

How to Adjust AVerMedia Webcam Focus

Practical steps to adjust AVerMedia webcam focus, choose the right camera, and improve image sharpness for calls and recordings.

Before you start

Focus behavior depends on the model and the app using the selected camera. Some AVerMedia webcams rely on fixed focus, while others adjust continuously. Check whether your model has a manual focus option before changing settings. You normally adjust focus locally in the AVerMedia software or the app that receives the camera feed; no separate online service is required.

Close other programs that may be using the webcam, because an app holding camera permission can prevent the settings utility from controlling the device. Position yourself at the distance you expect to use during a call, and remove bright light sources aimed directly into the lens if they make the image appear hazy.

Step-by-step instructions

Use the app where you plan to use the camera first. In most video call or camera apps, the selected camera appears in the device or video settings. If the app offers a camera control section, open it and look for a focus slider or an autofocus switch. Not every app exposes these controls; when they are missing, use the software supplied with the webcam.

Open the AVerMedia camera utility if it is installed. Look for the connected webcam and a picture settings or image adjustment area. If the model supports it, you may see a focus control with automatic and manual positions. Set the control to manual so the camera does not refocus while you are framing the shot.

Adjust the focus gradually while watching the preview window. If the image appears soft, move only the focus control at first, not the camera or lighting. Wait for the preview to settle after each small change. When you find the sharpest position, save or apply the setting if the utility requires it.

For a fixed-focus webcam, sharpness is mainly range-based. Keep the subject within the working distance shown in the product documentation rather than moving very close to the lens. If the image remains slightly soft, changing resolution or frame rate will not refocus the picture, but lowering the preview size can make the softness less obvious.

Check the output

Verify the result in the app you actually use for calls or recording. Open its preview and position a readable object, such as printed text, where your face will be. Confirm that the text looks clear at the intended distance and that the camera does not visibly refocus every few seconds.

Record a short clip if the app supports it. Review the recording at the resolution you plan to use, then check a still frame for edge detail around eyes, glasses, or hair. A fixed-focus or lower-quality sensor may never look perfectly crisp across the whole frame; the practical test is whether the subject area is acceptable for a normal call.

Common problems and next steps

If the focus option is unavailable, the webcam may not support manual adjustment through the current app. Confirm that the app is using the intended selected camera rather than a built-in camera or virtual device. Then check the AVerMedia utility for that specific model; some controls only appear there.

Poor lighting often looks like poor focus. Increase even light on the subject and reduce backlighting from a window, then compare the preview. If the image improves, the problem may have been sensor noise or a slow exposure, not the lens.

Camera permission can prevent a settings utility from changing the device while another app has it open. Close all camera apps, open one settings utility, and try again. If the image stays unrecoverably soft at your usual distance, check whether the product description specifies a fixed focus range and move the camera or subject to match it.
