Do You Need to Download Audio MIDI Setup for Mac?
Audio MIDI Setup is built into macOS and does not require a separate download. Learn where to find it, how to configure audio input and output, and what to do if a microphone or webcam audio device is missing.
The short answer
You do not need to download Audio MIDI Setup for macOS. It is a built-in utility that Apple includes with the operating system. If your Mac is running a current version of macOS, the app should already be present. There is no separate installer or free download to obtain from a website.
The only condition that changes this answer is if a macOS installation has been significantly altered or a previous troubleshooting step removed the utility. In normal circumstances, Audio MIDI Setup is present by default and does not need to be downloaded.
Where to find Audio MIDI Setup
Open the Applications folder, then open the Utilities folder. Audio MIDI Setup is listed there. You can also open Spotlight, type Audio MIDI Setup, and press Return.
If the app does not appear in the Utilities folder, do not search the web for a standalone download of the utility. Instead, consider reinstalling or repairing the macOS system from Apple's official recovery process. This document cannot verify third-party sources, and downloading a standalone Audio MIDI Setup package from an unofficial site is not advisable.
What Audio MIDI Setup does
Audio MIDI Setup manages audio devices and MIDI devices connected to the Mac. It is useful for checking sample rates, channel assignments, input and output routing, and whether a physical microphone, headset, or audio interface is visible to the system.
A webcam is a video capture device, not an audio device, so it does not normally appear in the audio window of Audio MIDI Setup. A built-in webcam microphone or an external USB microphone connected to a webcam may appear as an audio input device, but the video portion of a webcam is not configured here.
Checking a microphone or audio input
Open Audio MIDI Setup and select the Audio Devices window. Look for your microphone, headset, or audio interface in the list. The device may be listed under Input, Output, or both, depending on its capabilities.
If a device is present but not producing sound, check the selected input format and sample rate. Some applications expect the same sample rate as the device. A mismatch can sometimes cause no audio or distorted audio, though the exact behavior depends on the application and hardware.
If a microphone does not appear at all, the issue is usually one of the following: the device is not connected, the cable or port is faulty, a driver is missing, or the Mac has not detected the device. Audio MIDI Setup cannot make an undetected device appear.
Audio MIDI Setup and microphone permission
Audio MIDI Setup is not where microphone permission is managed. If an app cannot use the microphone even though the device appears in Audio MIDI Setup, check System Settings or System Preferences under Privacy and Security and then Microphone. Device detection and app-level permission are separate conditions. A microphone can be visible to macOS while a specific app is denied access.
How to check the active input device
Audio MIDI Setup shows available devices, but the active input selected for system sound or for an individual app may be different. On recent versions of macOS, choose Sound settings in System Settings to select the default input. Some apps, including video call and browser apps, have their own input selection menu that overrides the system default.
If a webcam test or video call is using the wrong microphone, confirm three points separately: the device is connected and detected, the operating system or app has permission, and the correct input is selected in the app.
What to do if the utility is missing or damaged
Because Audio MIDI Setup is part of macOS, a missing or damaged copy is treated as a system issue rather than as a missing download. Restart the Mac first. If the utility is still missing, use Apple's built-in recovery or reinstall process for macOS. This guide cannot provide a verified standalone installer or download link because Apple does not distribute the utility separately for normal macOS installations.
