Do You Need to Download Audio MIDI Setup for Mac?
Audio MIDI Setup is built into macOS and does not need a separate download. Learn how to open it, configure audio devices, and check the result.
Before you start
You do not need to download Audio MIDI Setup separately. The app is included with macOS and runs locally as part of the operating system. Attempts to download it from third-party sites are unnecessary and may install software that is not from a trusted source.
Use Audio MIDI Setup when you need to view or adjust audio devices, configure an input device or output device, set the sample rate, or review input level activity for connected microphones and other audio hardware.
Step-by-step instructions
Open Audio MIDI Setup
- Open Finder.
- Choose Go from the menu bar.
- Select Utilities.
- Double-click Audio MIDI Setup.
- If you prefer, open Spotlight with Command-Space, type Audio MIDI Setup, and press Return.
The app opens locally from the Utilities folder. No service account or download is required.
Select an audio device
- Find the Audio Devices section in the sidebar.
- Click the device you want to inspect.
- Check that the device is enabled.
- Review the available input and output configuration for that device.
Built-in Mac microphones and speakers appear alongside connected USB, Thunderbolt, or HDMI audio devices. Some devices may show different options depending on the macOS version and driver support.
Adjust common settings
- Select the input device to see its input level meter and available format settings.
- Change the sample rate only if your recording or playback workflow requires a specific value.
- Use the output device controls to set left-right balance or volume where supported.
- Close the window when finished; changes remain saved for the selected device.
If an option is unavailable, it may be controlled by the device manufacturer's own software rather than by Audio MIDI Setup.
Check the output
- Speak into the microphone and watch the input level meter move in the Audio Devices window.
- Play a short sound and confirm that the selected output device is active.
- Confirm that the chosen sample rate and channel format match the intended use.
- For video calls, return to the app you use for calls and select the same input or output device if the app overrides the system setting.
Audio MIDI Setup shows signal activity for supported devices, but it is not a recording or audio-quality test tool. If the meter moves and playback uses the expected device, the basic configuration is working.
Common problems and next steps
If a search result suggests downloading Audio MIDI Setup, ignore it. The utility is already present in the Utilities folder on a standard macOS installation.
If a connected microphone or camera audio device does not appear, close and reopen Audio MIDI Setup, check the physical connection, and verify that the device is powered on. For devices that require a driver or control app, install only the software supplied or approved by the manufacturer.
When background noise is present in a video call, open the audio settings in the calling app first. If the app lets you select an input device, choose the intended microphone and move closer to it. Audio MIDI Setup does not include a general noise-removal control, so persistent noise is usually handled by the app, the microphone position, or the environment.
If playback uses the wrong output device, select the intended device in Audio MIDI Setup and then check the output setting in the app playing the audio. Some apps remember a separate device choice and may need to be switched manually.
