How to Install an Asus MTP Driver on Windows 10

Get an Asus phone or tablet recognized as an MTP device on Windows 10: phone settings, Device Manager driver steps, checks, and fixes for common errors.

MTP (Media Transfer Protocol) lets Windows 10 browse the photos, videos, recordings and other files on an Asus Android phone or tablet over USB. Windows 10 includes a generic MTP driver, so you usually don't need to download a separate Asus package for file transfer. When the device shows up with a warning icon, appears only as "MTP", or doesn't appear at all, the usual fix is to point Windows at its built-in driver and set the phone to the correct USB mode. This guide covers that process.

Before you start

Everything in this guide runs locally on your PC and phone. You don't need an online service, unless you choose to get drivers through Windows Update or from Asus's official support page for your model. Check these points first:

  • A USB cable that carries data. Some cables only charge, and those never show an MTP device.
  • A USB port directly on the computer. Unpowered hubs and front-panel ports can cause unreliable connections.
  • An administrator account on Windows 10, which you need to change drivers.
  • The phone unlocked with its screen on when you connect it. Android usually hides storage from a locked device.
  • Your Windows 10 edition. N and KN editions ship without media components that MTP depends on. You can check the edition under Settings > System > About.

Asus also publishes a separate USB driver for Android development tools (ADB). That driver is for debugging and is not required for normal file transfer. Don't install it to fix MTP unless you also need ADB.

Step-by-step instructions

1. Set the phone to file transfer mode

Connect the phone and unlock it. Pull down the notification shade and tap the USB notification, which often says the device is charging over USB. Select File transfer. Depending on the Android and Asus software version, the option may be called Transfer files or MTP. If you choose PTP or a photo-transfer mode instead, Windows exposes only the camera folders, not full storage.

2. Find the device in Device Manager

Right-click the Start button and open Device Manager. Look under Portable Devices first. If the phone isn't there, check Other devices or Universal Serial Bus devices for an entry with a yellow warning icon. The entry may show your model name, a model code, or just MTP.

3. Assign the built-in MTP driver

  • Right-click the device entry and select Update driver.
  • Choose Browse my computer for drivers. On older Windows 10 builds this reads Browse my computer for driver software.
  • Choose Let me pick from a list of available drivers on my computer.
  • If a device type list appears, select Portable Devices and click Next.
  • If no suitable entry is listed, clear the Show compatible hardware checkbox.
  • Select Standard MTP Device as the manufacturer and MTP USB Device as the model. Click Next and accept any compatibility warning.
  • Unplug the phone, reconnect it, and select File transfer again if the phone asks.

This step is reversible. If the result is worse, open the device's Properties, go to the Driver tab, and use Roll Back Driver when it is available. You can also uninstall the device and reconnect it so Windows detects it again.

4. Optional: reinstall the MTP driver file

If the MTP USB Device entry is missing from the list, the driver package itself may be damaged. Open the INF folder inside your Windows folder, find wpdmtp.inf, right-click it and choose Install. Then repeat step 3.

5. Optional: get updates from Windows Update

On recent Windows 10 builds, go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and open View optional updates if it's shown. Look for driver updates related to your device or USB controller, and install only the entries you recognize.

Check the output

In Device Manager, the phone should appear under Portable Devices with no warning icon. In File Explorer, open This PC. The phone should be listed as a device, and opening it should show its internal storage, plus a memory card if one is installed. To confirm the connection works in both directions, copy a small file from the phone to the PC, then copy one from the PC back to the phone.

MTP has some limitations. Windows treats the phone as a media device rather than a normal drive, so it doesn't get a drive letter. Some programs can't open or edit files directly on the phone. Copy files to a local folder first, then edit them there. Transfers of large video files may be slower than from a regular USB drive, and a transfer can stop if the phone locks or the cable moves. Check the copied files open properly before you delete the originals from the phone.

Common problems and next steps

  • Phone only charges and doesn't appear: try another data cable and port, unlock the phone, and select File transfer again. On Android 10 and later, Developer options may include a Default USB configuration setting you can set to file transfer.
  • Device shows a yellow icon or error Code 10: repeat step 3 to assign MTP USB Device. If that fails, uninstall the device, unplug it, restart Windows, and reconnect.
  • MTP USB Device fails to install on an N or KN edition: install the Media Feature Pack that matches your Windows 10 version, restart, and try again.
  • Storage appears but folders are empty: unlock the phone and wait a moment, then press F5 in File Explorer to refresh the view.
  • Only camera folders are visible: the phone is in PTP or photo-transfer mode. Switch it to File transfer.
  • You installed the Asus ADB driver and MTP stopped working: roll back or remove that driver in Device Manager, then reassign MTP USB Device.

If the phone still isn't detected on a second computer with a known data cable, the cause is probably the phone's USB port or software, not the Windows driver. In that case, contact Asus support for your model.
