Apple Music to ALAC: Export Options and Limitations

Can you convert Apple Music to ALAC? Learn how Apple Music streaming, purchased files, and local lossless audio differ, and what export options actually exist.

Answer the main question

There is no converter that turns Apple Music streaming tracks into ALAC files. Apple Music songs are protected subscription streams. The Apple Music app does not provide an Export as ALAC command, and third-party conversion tools cannot legally remove that protection. ALAC is an output option for local audio that you already own, not for converting the Apple Music catalog.

Explain how it works

Apple Music playback is tied to an active subscription. Tracks downloaded for offline listening contain digital rights management and are designed to work only inside the Apple Music app while the subscription remains valid. Because those files are not unlocked audio files, they cannot be repackaged as ALAC.

ALAC, or Apple Lossless Audio Codec, is a lossless format commonly used for owned music. It preserves the original audio data while reducing file size compared with an uncompressed format. You may see ALAC as an option when importing CDs, converting local audio files, or downloading lossless purchases where the store provides lossless access.

Apply the explanation

If you have local files such as WAV, AIFF, or FLAC and want a lossless Apple-friendly copy, use an audio tool that supports ALAC encoding. Keep the original file as your source and create a separate ALAC copy for use with Apple devices or software that accepts ALAC.

For music you purchased as downloadable files, the ability to create an ALAC copy depends on the format and permissions supplied by the store. A purchase does not automatically mean the downloaded file is unprotected or available in a lossless format.

Limits and related questions

Apple Music lossless streaming is not the same as owning ALAC files. A high-resolution or lossless badge describes playback quality delivered through the subscription, not an export right. Offline downloads are still subscription content and stop working if the subscription ends.

Avoid tools that claim to convert Apple Music streams to ALAC. They often rely on recording or unauthorized decryption rather than a genuine format conversion, and they may produce lower quality or mismatched audio.

Screen recording or loopback capture is not a substitution for conversion. It re-records the audio as it plays, changing the signal path and failing to retain the exact data of the source stream.
