Apowersoft Desktop Screen Recorder: Features and Getting Started
How to set up the Apowersoft desktop screen recorder: prerequisites, capture and audio settings, checking your recording, and fixes for common problems.
Apowersoft makes screen capture software for recording tutorials, video calls, gameplay and presentations. This guide covers installing the desktop recorder, choosing capture and audio settings, making a first recording and checking the file. Menu names and options change between releases, so use the labels in your installed version where they differ from the descriptions here.
Before you start
First, confirm which Apowersoft product you have. The company has offered a browser-based recorder that relies on a small launcher, as well as installable desktop recorders. A desktop recorder runs as an application on your computer, but that does not by itself mean every feature works offline or that recordings stay local. Check the app's settings and the developer's current privacy policy to see where files are saved, whether any cloud upload or sharing feature exists, and what account or license the version requires. Also check whether the free version limits recording length or adds a watermark, because these terms can change.
- A supported operating system version, as listed by the developer for the current release
- The installer downloaded from the developer's official website, not a third-party mirror
- Permission to install software on the computer (administrator rights on many systems)
- On macOS, screen recording and microphone access granted to the app in System Settings under Privacy & Security (System Preferences under Security & Privacy on older versions)
- On Windows, microphone access allowed for desktop apps in Settings under Privacy & security, then Microphone
- Enough free space on a local drive for video files, which can grow large in long sessions
- The microphone, webcam or headset you plan to use, connected before launching the recorder
Step-by-step instructions
- Install the recorder from the official installer and launch it. If the operating system asks for screen recording or microphone permission, allow it. On macOS you may need to restart the app after granting screen recording access.
- Open the app's settings or options panel and find the output folder. Choose a local folder you can easily locate.
- Select the capture area. Desktop recorders usually let you record the full screen, a selected region or a specific window. Choose the smallest area that covers what you need.
- Set the audio source. Pick system sound for application and call audio, the microphone for your voice, both for narrated calls or tutorials, or none for silent capture.
- If you want a webcam overlay and your version supports it, choose the correct camera in the recorder rather than relying on the system default.
- Review the output format, frame rate and quality settings (described below), and note any start, pause and stop hotkeys.
- Make a short test recording of 10 to 20 seconds. Speak into the microphone and play some system audio.
- Stop the recording and open the file before starting the real session.
Key settings: MP4 is the most widely compatible output format if your version offers it. Higher frame rates make motion smoother but produce larger files and use more processor power. For slides and documents, a lower frame rate is usually enough. Hotkeys let you start and stop without the recorder's controls showing in the capture. Some versions also offer cursor highlighting, scheduled recording or a built-in editor. Treat these as optional and confirm they appear in your release before planning around them.
To keep changes reversible, write down the default values before you edit them and change one setting at a time between test recordings. That way you can return to a working configuration if a change causes problems.
Check the output
Open the saved file from the output folder in a separate media player, not only in the recorder's preview. Confirm the following: the whole intended area is visible, text is readable at full size, both your voice and system sound are present if you selected both, audio stays in sync with the video through the end, the duration matches what you recorded, and no unexpected watermark or time cut-off appears.
Check the file's properties in your operating system to confirm the resolution, format and size. If the file will not play in the program you need, try exporting again in a more common format, or use a converter. The recorder's quality is limited by your screen resolution, the selected settings and your computer's performance. It cannot add detail that was not on screen.
Common problems and next steps
Black or blank video: On macOS, confirm the app is enabled under screen recording permission, then restart it. Some streaming services and protected players block screen capture, so a black window in those apps is expected rather than a recorder fault. Disabling hardware acceleration in the app being recorded, such as a browser, can help in some cases.
No system sound: Make sure system audio is selected as a source and that the sound is playing through the output device the recorder captures. macOS does not let every app capture system audio directly. If the recorder asks to install an extra audio component, follow its prompt. If you decline, expect microphone-only audio.
Microphone not detected or silent: Check operating system privacy permissions, select the specific microphone in the recorder rather than the default device, and close other apps that may be holding the microphone, such as a video call client, then try again.
Choppy video or very large files: Lower the frame rate or quality, record a smaller region, close heavy background programs, and save to a local drive with free space rather than a network or cloud-synced folder.
Before recording video calls, confirm that participants agree and that it is allowed in your location and organization. Review where the recorder stores files and delete test recordings you no longer need. If you stop using the software, uninstall it through your operating system's standard app removal method and revoke its screen recording and microphone permissions.
