How to Fix Chrome Microphone Problems on Android
Practical steps to diagnose and fix microphone issues in Chrome on Android, including site permissions, device selection, and system settings.
Identify the symptom and environment
Start by noting exactly when the microphone fails. The problem may appear during a video call, voice search, web recorder, or an online meeting. Check whether the issue happens on every site or only one site. Also record the Android version, Chrome version, microphone type, and whether the microphone is built into the phone, wired, or connected by Bluetooth.
Isolate where the fault occurs
Test the microphone outside Chrome first. Open a built-in voice recorder or camera app and make a short recording. If the microphone works there, the hardware and operating system are likely able to capture audio, so the fault is probably in browser settings or site permissions.
Next, test another Android app that uses the microphone, such as a phone dialer with speakerphone off or a messaging app voice note. If those apps also fail, the problem may be in the operating-system permission or audio routing. If they work, focus on Chrome and the specific website.
In Chrome, open a different site that requests microphone access. If one site fails while another works, the issue is likely connected to site permissions or the site's audio settings. If every site fails, browser settings or Chrome's access to the microphone are more likely.
Try reversible fixes in order
First, check Android permissions. Open the system Settings app, go to Apps or Applications, choose Chrome, and open Permissions. Make sure Microphone is allowed. The exact labels can differ by Android version and device manufacturer, but the path should include the Chrome app entry and its permissions section.
Next, check the site permission in Chrome. Open the page where the microphone fails, tap the lock, info, or site settings icon in the address bar, and open Permissions or Site settings. Set Microphone to Allow rather than Block or Ask. Reload the page after changing the setting.
If the page offers an input device selector, open it and confirm that the intended microphone is selected. On Android the available choices may be limited, but a Bluetooth headset or wired headset can appear when connected. Choose the built-in phone microphone if the connected device is not capturing audio.
Check the input level shown by the website or web app. If the level meter stays flat, speak closer to the microphone and remove any case or cover that may block the phone's microphone openings. If possible, move to a quieter area so background noise is not masking the test.
Try changing the browser audio routing by disconnecting Bluetooth and wired audio devices. Close Chrome completely, reopen it, and test the microphone again. If another app was recently using the microphone, close that app so it releases the input device.
Confirm the result
Return to the original page or call screen and repeat the task that failed. Use a short spoken phrase and watch the site's input level or recording indicator. If the page previously produced silence, play back the test recording or ask the other participant whether your voice is now audible.
Do not judge the fix only by the permission labels. A site can show that microphone access is allowed while the wrong input device is selected or the Android system mutes audio from another app. Confirm with actual audio capture, not just the displayed setting.
If the problem remains
Keep a short record of what you observed: which apps work with the microphone, which sites fail, whether Bluetooth or wired audio changes the result, and whether Android shows the microphone permission as allowed. This information helps a support technician avoid repeating the same checks.
A problem in one browser or one site is not proof that the phone microphone is broken. If the microphone also fails in the system recorder and other apps with no audio device connected, then device support or repair may be appropriate. Otherwise, continue with browser, site, or accessory troubleshooting.
