Using the Amcrest Chrome Plugin for IP Camera Access and Audio
A practical guide to the Amcrest Chrome plugin for IP cameras, covering setup, microphone capture, and compatibility for viewing and recording.
What is the Amcrest Chrome plugin?
The Amcrest Chrome plugin, often referred to as the Amcrest Web View or an NPAPI replacement extension, allows you to view live video and hear audio from Amcrest IP cameras directly in the Google Chrome browser. It acts as a bridge between the browser and the camera's local web interface, enabling features that standard web pages cannot access on their own, such as two-way audio and certain video codecs.
Does this concern a webcam microphone?
No. The Amcrest Chrome plugin does not control or capture audio from a USB webcam microphone connected to your computer. The plugin exclusively manages the connection to an Amcrest IP camera on your network. If you have a separate webcam with a built-in microphone or a standalone USB microphone, this plugin does not access, enable, or alter those devices.
The audio you hear through the plugin comes from the IP camera's own built-in microphone or an external microphone connected to that camera's audio input. The plugin does not use your computer's local microphone as the capture source for the camera feed.
How the plugin handles IP camera audio
When viewing an Amcrest IP camera through Chrome, the plugin can stream audio from the camera to your browser. This is unidirectional receiving: you listen to sound captured by the camera. Some Amcrest models also support two-way audio through the plugin. In that case, your computer's microphone sends audio to the camera's speaker output, but this is a separate function from any webcam microphone. The plugin distinguishes between microphone capture on the computer and speaker playback on the camera, preventing confusion between local and remote audio paths.
Installation and compatibility
Modern Chrome versions no longer support legacy NPAPI plugins. Amcrest now provides a newer extension called Amcrest Web View, available through the Chrome Web Store. This extension works with recent Amcrest firmware and supports H.264 video streams without external players. Older models that depend on the original NPAPI plugin may require using Amcrest Surveillance Pro software or a browser such as Internet Explorer in compatibility mode. Manufacturer documentation is the only reliable source for whether a specific camera model works with the current extension.
Practical next steps
If your goal is to view and listen to an Amcrest IP camera in Chrome, install the Amcrest Web View extension and ensure your camera has up-to-date firmware. Audio from the camera will play through your computer speakers or headphones. If your goal is to use a webcam microphone for video calls or recording, this plugin is irrelevant. The webcam microphone is managed by your operating system and the application you are using, such as Zoom, Teams, or OBS, not by any IP camera plugin.
Do not mistake the IP camera's built-in microphone for a webcam microphone on your local machine. They are separate audio devices with separate controls. The plugin only bridges the browser and the network camera.
