How to Allow Chrome Microphone Access on iPhone

Step-by-step instructions for enabling and checking microphone permission for Chrome on iPhone, including verifying the audio input and fixing common access problems.

Before you start

Microphone access in Chrome on iPhone depends on two permission layers: the site permission managed by Chrome and the operating-system permission managed by iOS. Chrome can only offer the microphone to a website when iOS allows Chrome itself to use the input device. Check that you have the latest available version of Chrome installed through the App Store, because permission labels and menu paths can differ between older versions.

For most web tools, microphone capture begins locally in the browser or the page. The prompt does not by itself tell you whether the site uploads or retains audio. If the page mentions uploading, cloud processing, recording storage or data retention, treat those details as site-specific facts to confirm separately.

Step-by-step instructions

Follow these steps on the iPhone where you want to use the microphone.

  • Open the Settings app and find Chrome in the app list. If Chrome is not listed, open Chrome once and return to Settings.
  • Tap Microphone and enable access to the input device if it is off.
  • Open Chrome, go to the page that needs audio capture, and start its microphone feature.
  • When the browser permission prompt appears, tap Allow.
  • If no Chrome prompt appears, tap the site settings icon in the address bar, open Permissions or Site settings, and set Microphone to Allow.

The site permission is scoped to that site in Chrome, while the iOS setting controls device access for Chrome as a whole. Revoking the site permission in Chrome does not have to change the iOS permission. If you want to reverse the change later, set the site permission back to Ask or Block, or disable microphone access for Chrome in the iOS Settings app.

Check the output

Open the page that provides an audio test or recording indicator, then speak at a normal distance. A working setup should show a visible input level or produce clear playback, although some pages display only a recording status instead of a meter. If the signal is present but weak or noisy, reduce background noise, move closer to the microphone, or make sure the iPhone microphone openings are not covered.

Web audio capture may be affected by the sample rate or format chosen by the site or the browser. Do not treat the visible level as proof of the exact sample rate, bit depth, file format, upload behavior or retention period unless the tool states those values and you can verify them.

Common problems and next steps

If permission is denied even after tapping Allow, the most useful correction is to close the problematic tab, reopen it, and try the microphone again. An affected site may need a new permission request after the iOS setting changes. If Chrome does not appear under the iOS microphone settings, use the microphone once from Chrome so the permission entry becomes available.

When another app is using the microphone, or when the iPhone is on a call, the browser may receive no usable input device. End that activity and retry. If multiple tabs have audio access, review each tab's site permissions so an unused session is not holding the microphone. For access failures limited to one site, clear that site's Chrome permissions and request access again.
