How to Add Google Voice Calling Credit

Learn how to add Google Voice calling credit on the web or in the app, confirm your balance, and fix common payment or calling credit problems.

Google Voice calling credit is a prepaid balance used for calls that are not free on your plan, most often international calls. This guide shows how to top up the balance, confirm it arrived, and fix the problems that most often block a purchase.

Before you start

Adding credit is not a local process. The purchase happens on Google's servers and is charged through the payment methods linked to your Google account, so you need an internet connection and a signed-in Google Voice account.

  • A personal Google Voice account with an active Voice number, signed in on the web or in the mobile app.
  • A payment method your Google account accepts, or the ability to add one during checkout.
  • The current call rates for the destination you plan to call. Rates are listed in Google Voice, and they change, so check them close to the call.
  • If you use Google Voice through a work or school account, find out who manages billing. In managed accounts, international calling and payment are usually controlled by the administrator, and the option to buy credit may not appear for you.

Read the current Google Voice terms on credit expiration and refunds before buying a larger amount. Do not assume unused credit can be returned or will last indefinitely.

Step-by-step instructions

The steps are similar on the web and in the mobile apps. Labels and their positions can vary slightly between app versions, so look for the wording described below if the layout differs.

On a computer

  • Open Google Voice in your browser and sign in with the account that owns the Voice number.
  • Open Settings.
  • Go to the Payments section. It shows your current calling credit balance.
  • Select the option to add credit.
  • Choose one of the amounts offered.
  • Confirm or add a payment method, review the total, and complete the purchase.

In the Android or iPhone app

  • Open the Google Voice app and confirm the correct account is selected.
  • Open the menu and go to Settings.
  • Find the Payments or credit section and select the option to add credit.
  • Pick an amount, confirm the payment method, and approve the purchase.
  • If the app sends you to a browser page to finish, complete the payment there and then return to the app.

If you only need credit for one or two calls, start with the smallest amount offered. You can top up again later. A larger single purchase cannot easily be undone.

Check the output

  • Return to Settings and then Payments, and confirm that the balance shows the new amount.
  • Open the transaction or billing history in the same section and check that the purchase appears once, not twice.
  • Compare the charge on your payment method with the amount you selected. Taxes or currency conversion may make the bank statement differ slightly.
  • Before an important international call, check the per-minute rate for that destination and estimate how many minutes your balance covers.

Credit only pays for the call. It does not affect call quality. If the other person cannot hear you clearly, check your microphone and headset in your device's sound settings and confirm that the browser or app has microphone permission. Then place a short call to confirm the connection works before a longer conversation.

Common problems and next steps

There is no option to add credit

First check which account you are signed in to. A work or school account may hide calling credit because the administrator controls billing, so contact them about international calling. On a personal account, update the app or try the web version, since older app versions may lay out settings differently.

The payment is declined

Check the card details, billing address and expiration date stored in your Google account's payment settings. Some banks block the first charge from a new merchant, so check your banking app for a confirmation request. If the card still fails, add a different payment method and try again.

The balance did not update

Refresh the page or close and reopen the app, then check Payments again. If the charge appears on your statement but not in Google Voice, do not buy again right away, because that can create a duplicate charge. Check the transaction history first, then contact Google support with the purchase details.

A call fails for lack of credit even though you have a balance

Check the rate for the exact number you are dialing. Mobile numbers and some special numbers can cost more than landlines in the same country. Also confirm the number is entered in full international format with the country code. If the balance covers the rate and the call still fails, note the time and number and report it to Google Voice support.

You want to stop paying for calls

Calling credit is prepaid, so you are charged only when you choose to add more. If you do not want to keep a balance, avoid topping up and review the credit and refund terms in Google Voice for any remaining amount.
