Acer Webcam Driver: Finding and Installing the Correct Package
How to find the right Acer webcam driver for your exact model, install it safely, and tell a driver problem apart from permission or app settings.
Which Acer webcam driver do you need?
The correct driver is the one listed for your exact Acer model on Acer's official support page, matched to your operating system version. Identify the laptop with the serial number or SNID printed on the label underneath or shown in Acer's preinstalled support utility. A camera package for a similar-looking model may not match your hardware.
Many Acer built-in webcams work with the generic camera driver included in Windows. If yours does, you may not need a separate download. Install a package only when Acer lists one for your model, when Windows shows the camera with an error, or when the camera is missing entirely.
How the webcam and its driver work together
A driver lets the operating system talk to the camera hardware. Most webcams follow the USB Video Class standard, which Windows, macOS, Linux and ChromeOS support with built-in drivers. This is why many external webcams, including Acer-branded ones, are plug-and-play.
Some recent laptops connect the camera through the processor's image processing unit instead of an internal USB connection. These cameras usually depend on a model-specific package, and a generic driver will not replace it. Whether your laptop uses this design depends on the model, so check the driver list for your serial number rather than assuming.
Laptops with face sign-in may also have a separate infrared camera. It appears as its own device and can have its own driver, separate from the regular video camera.
Installing or reinstalling the driver on Windows
- Find your model or serial number on the label or in Acer's support utility.
- On Acer's official support page, enter it, choose your Windows version and open the driver list.
- Download the camera package if one is listed. Prefer the newest version that matches your operating system.
- Close video call apps and any other program that might be using the camera.
- Run the installer, follow its prompts and restart when asked.
- Open the Camera app or a webcam test page to confirm the image appears.
If no package is listed, or the camera stopped working after an update, open Device Manager. Look under Cameras or Imaging devices. If the camera shows a warning icon, right-click it, choose Uninstall device, then use Scan for hardware changes or restart so Windows reinstalls its driver. Leave the option to delete driver software unchecked unless you already have the replacement package downloaded.
Windows Update can also deliver hardware drivers. On Windows 11, check Settings, then Windows Update, then Advanced options and Optional updates. Avoid third-party driver updater tools: they can install packages that do not match your model, and their handling of system data and files is not something you can easily verify.
When the driver is not the problem
A webcam that appears in Device Manager without errors usually has a working driver. Before reinstalling anything, check these common causes:
- Camera permission: in Windows privacy settings, make sure camera access is on for the device and for the app you are using, including desktop apps.
- Physical shutter or key: some Acer models have a privacy shutter or a keyboard shortcut that turns the camera off.
- Selected camera: video call and recording apps may default to another device, such as a virtual camera or an external webcam. Pick the built-in camera in the app's video settings.
- Another app holding the camera: on Windows, usually only one app can use the camera at a time. Close the other one and try again.
- Security software: some antivirus products have their own webcam protection that blocks apps.
Limits and related questions
Image quality is mostly set by the sensor and lens, not the driver. A newer package can fix crashes, a missing device or app compatibility, but it will not raise the maximum resolution beyond what the hardware supports. Available resolution and frame rate also depend on the app, which may lower them to save bandwidth during calls. Lighting has a large effect: in dim rooms many webcams lower the frame rate to brighten the picture, so face a light source before blaming the driver.
Chromebooks include camera support in ChromeOS and do not take separate driver downloads; system updates handle it. On Linux, most USB webcams work through the kernel's built-in video driver, while cameras connected through an image processing unit may have limited support depending on distribution and kernel version. Acer's driver downloads target Windows unless the support page says otherwise.
If the camera still does not appear in Device Manager after reinstalling the listed package and checking the settings above, the cause may be hardware, such as a loose internal cable or a failed module. In that case, contact Acer support or a qualified repair service with your serial number, rather than trying more driver packages.
