4G Voice Calling: How to Use Voice Calls over LTE

Learn how 4G voice calling (VoLTE) works, what your phone and carrier need, how to turn it on, how to confirm it is active and how to fix common problems.

4G voice calling, usually called VoLTE (Voice over LTE), carries phone calls over the 4G data network instead of older 2G or 3G voice networks. When it works, calls can connect faster, may sound clearer if both sides support HD Voice, and your phone can stay on 4G during a call. As older networks shut down in many regions, VoLTE is often required just to make ordinary calls.

Before you start

VoLTE is not a local feature you can switch on by yourself. It runs on your mobile carrier's network, so the phone, the SIM and your account all have to be supported and provisioned by the carrier. Check these points first:

  • Your carrier offers VoLTE in your country or region, and your plan includes it.
  • Your phone model supports VoLTE. Some carriers only enable it on devices they have approved, so an imported or unlocked phone may be blocked even if the hardware supports it.
  • The phone has the latest system update and carrier settings installed.
  • Your SIM card or eSIM is current. Older SIM cards sometimes need replacing before VoLTE can be activated.
  • You have 4G/LTE coverage where you plan to call.
  • If you use two SIMs, check whether your phone supports VoLTE on both lines or only on one at a time.

VoLTE is separate from Wi-Fi calling. Wi-Fi calling routes calls over a Wi-Fi connection, while VoLTE uses the cellular 4G network. Your carrier may support one, both or neither.

Step-by-step instructions

Menu names differ between phone makers, system versions and carriers, so treat the labels below as typical wording rather than exact paths. If a setting is missing, that often means the carrier has not enabled it for your device or account.

On Android phones

  • Open Settings and go to the section for mobile or cellular networks. It may be grouped under Connections or Network and internet.
  • If you have more than one SIM, select the line you want to configure.
  • Look for a switch named VoLTE, VoLTE calls, 4G calling, LTE calling, HD Voice or Enhanced 4G LTE Mode, and turn it on.
  • Make sure the preferred network type allows 4G or LTE (for example, an option that includes LTE or 4G rather than 3G only or 2G only).
  • Restart the phone so it registers on the network with the new setting.

On iPhone

  • Open Settings and go to Cellular (called Mobile Data in some regions).
  • Select your line if you use dual SIM, then open the data options for that line.
  • Look for Voice and Data or Enable LTE. Depending on the model and carrier, you may see options that include LTE or 4G, or a choice between Data Only and Voice and Data.
  • Choose the option that allows voice over LTE (for example, Voice and Data). On 5G models, the choices may include 5G modes alongside LTE.
  • If the option is missing, install any pending iOS update and carrier settings update, then check again.

To undo the change, return to the same setting and switch it off or pick the previous network option. If your network has retired 3G, turning VoLTE off may leave the phone unable to make normal calls, so only do this for troubleshooting.

Check the output

There is no single universal indicator that a call is using VoLTE, but these signs help confirm it:

  • During a call, the network indicator stays on 4G or LTE instead of switching to 3G, H or E.
  • Some phones show a VoLTE, HD or similar icon in the status bar or on the call screen.
  • On some Android devices, a hidden phone information screen shows an IMS registration status. If it reports registered, the phone is connected to the carrier's voice-over-LTE service.
  • Your carrier's app or account page may list VoLTE or HD Voice as active on your line.

Call quality depends on more than your own phone. HD Voice usually needs both callers to have compatible phones and networks, so calls to another carrier, to a landline or across borders may still sound like a standard call. Weak 4G coverage can also cause the call to fall back to an older network where one still exists.

Common problems and next steps

The VoLTE setting does not appear

The phone usually hides the switch when the carrier has not enabled VoLTE for that device or account. Install system and carrier updates, then ask your carrier whether your model is supported and whether VoLTE is provisioned on your line. For imported or unlocked phones, ask specifically whether the device is on their approved list.

Calls fail or the phone shows no service for calls after a 3G shutdown

If your carrier has switched off 3G and your phone cannot use VoLTE, calls may not connect even though data works. Confirm VoLTE is turned on and provisioned. If the carrier says your device cannot be supported, you may need a different phone to keep making calls on that network.

Calls drop to 3G or sound low quality

Check that the preferred network type includes 4G or LTE and that the VoLTE switch is on for the SIM you are calling from. Coverage gaps and calls to people without HD Voice support can also limit quality, and those cannot be fixed on your phone.

VoLTE stopped working after a SIM change or update

Restart the phone, then check the setting again, because updates and new SIMs can reset network options. Resetting network settings can clear a stuck configuration, but it also removes saved Wi-Fi networks and Bluetooth pairings, so note those before you try it. If the problem continues, ask your carrier to re-provision VoLTE on your line.

Roaming and emergency calls

VoLTE abroad depends on agreements between your carrier and the foreign network, so it may not work while roaming even when it works at home. Emergency call handling over VoLTE also varies by carrier and region. Confirm both with your carrier rather than assuming they work the same way as at home.
