16-Track Multitrack Recorders

Practical setup, recording and checking steps for a 16-track multitrack recorder. Learn how to arm tracks, set levels and handle common problems.

Before you start

Power the recorder from a stable supply or a fully charged battery. Confirm that the current project has enough free space and that storage is formatted by the recorder, not by a computer. A 16-track recorder normally records locally to its own storage, so no online service is required for the basic workflow.

Connect microphones or line sources before powering phantom-powered condenser mics. If the recorder supports phantom power per input or per bank, enable it only for inputs that need it. Set the sample rate and bit depth for the project before recording because changing them later can produce files that are difficult to combine predictably.

Step-by-step instructions

Create a new project or song and name it clearly. Select the input source for each track, such as an analog input, digital input or internal source. On many recorders this is done per track in an input routing or assignment screen; the exact menu names can vary by product line and firmware version.

Arm the tracks you want to record. Depending on the recorder, a track is armed with a dedicated track button, a touchscreen control or a combination of track-select and record-arm actions. Keep unneeded tracks disarmed so they do not create unwanted takes.

Set input gain while the source produces a realistic level. Use the channel metering or a metering page and aim for a level that stays below clipping at the loudest moment. If available, use a high-pass filter to reduce handling noise or room rumble at the input.

Check monitoring carefully. Use headphones when a microphone is near speakers, and mute or lower channels that could create a feedback loop. Set the headphone level separately from the recording level.

Press transport stop if needed, return the timeline to the start point and begin recording. Play or perform the full source while watching the meters. Stop the transport when the take is complete. To keep a further take without losing the first, move to another location or use the recorder's supported take, track or project behavior rather than recording over a take you may still need.

Check the output

Play back the recorded region and confirm that each intended track contains audio. Check that quiet passages are present and loud peaks are not distorted. If the recorder shows clip indicators, inspect those points by listening and watching the waveform display when available.

Verify that tracks remain aligned with each other. In a normal multitrack playback, sounds recorded at the same moment should stay together. Solo or mute tracks to confirm that the expected sources are on the expected tracks.

Check the available output and transfer options in the recorder's file or project menu. The recording format and available exports depend on the product and its current firmware, so confirm the resulting filenames and format before removing the storage card or starting another project.

Common problems and next steps

A track that does not record is often caused by incorrect input routing, a disarmed track, low input gain or a source that is not actually sending signal. Check the routing screen first, then replace or reseat the cable and confirm that the source is active.

A track that records too quietly may need more gain, while a track that distorts needs less gain or more distance from a loud source. Reset the level, record a short test and listen to the result before making another full take.

If tracks can be heard out of time or unexpectedly doubled, check monitoring and routing for a path that combines a direct input signal with a delayed recorded signal. The available monitoring mode and latency settings depend on the recorder, so compare the track input selection with the monitoring or output routing page.

If the recorder stops during a take or reports a storage problem, stop recording and inspect the storage media and available free space. Use media approved for the recorder where required, and do not remove the card or disconnect power during writing.
